Celebrate Penguin Awareness Day at Ballarat Wildlife Park

January is a special time for bird lovers as Penguin Awareness Day approaches! At Ballarat Wildlife Park, we are proud to shine a spotlight on our adorable colony of Penguins and invite you to celebrate these incredible animals with us.

Meet the Stars of the Show: Ballarat’s Little Penguins

With their sleek blue-and-white plumage and endearing waddle, our Penguins never fail to captivate visitors of all ages.  Unlike their Antarctic cousins, the Little Penguin residents here at the park are native to warmer climates like Australia, and also happen to be the smallest Penguin species in the world!

Here are some fascinating facts about Little Penguins:

  1. Smallest Penguin Species: As the smallest Penguin species, they stand only 30-35cm tall and weigh about 1kg, making them both adorable and earning them the nickname “Fairy Penguins”.
  2. Blue Feathers: Unlike traditional black and white Penguins, Little Penguins have blue feathers.
  3. Exceptional Swimmers: They are strong swimmers, reaching speeds of up to 6 km/h and diving to depths of 20-30 meters in search of fish, squid, and yummy krill.
  4. Nocturnal on Land: Little Penguins spend their days hunting at sea and return to their nesting burrows after sunset, making them nocturnal on land.
  5. Loyal Mates: Little Penguins are monogamous, often forming long-term pair bonds and returning to the same burrow each year to raise their chicks.

Rare in Victoria: Ballarat Wildlife Park is one of the few places you will find Penguins in Victoria, outside of Phillip Island, and offers one of the best vantage points for viewing Penguins up close!

Penguins are extraordinary animals that play an essential role in marine ecosystems. However, many species face threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. Penguin Awareness Day serves as a reminder to appreciate these beautiful birds and take steps toward their conservation for generations to come.

What’s Happening on Penguin Awareness Day?

Seeing Penguins up close at Ballarat Wildlife Park is an experience you won’t forget! This January, we have a fun lineup of activities to celebrate Penguin Awareness Day:

Daily Penguin Presentations: Get up close with the Penguins daily and learn about these curious little characters from our expert Keepers. Daily from 12.30PM at the Penguin habitat.

Pop Up Feeds: Catch the Keepers for special pop up feeds throughout the week, and watch as the Penguins dive in for their favourite treats! Morning and Afternoon from Monday January 20 – Sunday January 27.

And don’t forget, just by visiting Ballarat Wildlife Park you’re also contributing to our efforts to protect and care for them!

Make a Day of It

While you’re here, discover our diverse range of wildlife, including Kangaroos, Koalas, Crocodiles, and Meerkats. Our 37-acre park offers plenty of space to roam and discover the beauty of Australia’s unique animals and so much more!

Enjoy a delicious meal or snack at our fully licensed café, or bring a picnic to relax in the park’s lush, green surroundings.

How You Can Help Penguins

While visiting Ballarat Wildlife Park is a fantastic way to support Penguin conservation, there are other ways you can make a difference:

  • Reduce Plastic Use: Avoid single-use plastics that often end up in oceans, threatening marine life.
  • Support Conservation Efforts: Donate to or volunteer with organisations dedicated to wildlife preservation.
  • Spread Awareness: Share what you’ve learned about Penguins and their challenges with your friends and family.

Make Sustainable Choices: Opt for sustainable options and reduce your carbon footprint to help combat climate change.

Celebrate with us!

This Penguin Awareness Day, let’s come together to celebrate these remarkable birds and take steps to protect their future. Don’t miss out on the chance to connect with nature and experience the magic of Penguins!

Mark your calendar for January 20th, and we’ll see you at Ballarat Wildlife Park!

“We had a wonderful morning at the zoo. It had great enclosures, clean and well kept. The gran children were able to get close to many of the animals and had no trouble spotting those that were in enclosures. The animals appeared to be very well kelt and many had a rapport with their keepers. The wombats even rolled over for tummy rubs, very cute. A wonderfull time was had by all.”

Julie Muir

“It is a small interactive zoo. It is fun to feed the kangaroos by hand. The animal presentations are fun and informative.”

Deep Patel

“Visiting the wildlife park was so enjoyable, it was honestly just a spur of the moment on this solo trip but it was worth it. There were a few animals out that day but not too many, maybe it was hot that day, but you can’t not see kangaroos just chilling about so you have plenty of time to feed them, a food bag costs an extra 4 bucks fyi.. careful tho, some kangaroos really chomp down so hold your hand out flat 🤣. It was also really nice of the park to have presentations around the zoo/park so ppl could go to, both to watch animals but to learn more about them at the same time, I managed to watch one about the tigers :)”

Ricky Chan

“The most funny place to have interaction with Kangaroos from kangaroo island, Emus, llamas, etc. Reptile show is awesome! Plenty of green areas with tables and seats to have a picnic.”

Julio Najera

“Kids had a great time. They cuddled Koala’s, fed Kangaroos, and took lots of photos, including with Kangaroos. The tiger enclosure and the mini showtime are great, too.
There was a wait inside the cafe during lunchtime. However, the food and the coffee were great.
Tip: Get food for kangaroos at the front before you go in.”

Sanoj

“Great place for everyone… The staff is very friendly and informative. Oh and don’t forget to eat their Fish & Chips 👌 perfectly cooked. 😋”

Farhan Khan

“Our goal is to provide a quality interactive experience between people and animals for the promotion of respect, empathy, and understanding. We contribute to the survival of the environments we ultimately share with them.”
