Here at the Ballarat Wildlife Park we have an amazing collection of animals that lay eggs. From slithery reptiles to big birds! Make sure you come and visit our egg layers these school holidays. Check out a small selection of our animals below:
Cassowary:
One of the largest birds in the world, the cassowary is known to be a very dangerous and flightless bird. At the Ballarat Wildlife Park you can come and see two of these majestic animals, Echo and Xena. Want to get even closure? Cassowary encounters are available for booking, where you can get the chance to have an even closer look at these animals, and even feed them!
Fairy Penguin:
As well as having some of the largest flightless birds, we are also home to the smallest species of penguin! We have a colony of 15 Fairy Penguins here at the park, which you can see daily during one of our many animal presentations.
Inland Taipan:
These snakes are the most venomous in the world! How cool is that?! Not only do we have some adults, last year we were able to hatch 11 juvenile inland taipans. Fun fact: babies are just as venomous as adults, with a single bite from one of these snakes containing enough venom to kill over 100 men! Although being the worlds most venomous snakes, there is no recorded death due to an Inland Taipain bite!
Salt-water Crocodiles:
We have some extremely large animals here at the park and Crunch the saltie takes the cake for the biggest! At over 5 meters long and weighing approximately 750kg, Crunch is truly a heavyweight of the animal kingdom. Crunch lives with his girlfriend Bella, a much smaller Saltwater crocodile at 3m and she can produce up to 70 eggs in one clutch! You can see Crunch put on an incredible show every Sunday as a one of our presentations. FUN FACT : Saltwater Crocs have the hardest bite force of any animal on the planet, at 3700PSI (pounds per square inch) of jaw pressure, a human has 150 PSI.
